Three Nigerian designers showcased the richness and sophistication of modern African fashion on one of the world’s most influential runways.
London Fashion Week SS27 drew to a close in late September, with Nigerian creativity once again firmly in the spotlight.

Three designers of Nigerian heritage Mowalola, Onalaja, and Tolu Coker featured prominently on the official schedule, each presenting collections shaped by distinct visions, personal journeys, and creative philosophies.
Together, they demonstrated the diversity and global relevance of contemporary Nigerian fashion, proving that the country’s influence extends far beyond trends into storytelling, culture, and innovation.
Mowalola brought her trademark boldness to the runway with The Hunger, a collection that combined provocative silhouettes, handcrafted Nigerian embellishments, and her debut collaboration with Jordan Brand.
The presentation blended fashion, performance, and commentary, reinforcing her reputation as one of the industry’s most daring voices.
For Onalaja, the season was defined by resilience.
Just months after a devastating fire destroyed her London studio, archives, and original SS27 collection, the designer returned with Rising From The Ashes, a deeply personal body of work inspired by the phoenix.
Rebuilt from surviving sketches and renewed determination, the collection became one of the week’s most talked-about debuts, drawing attention not only for its craftsmanship but also for the powerful story behind it.
Meanwhile, Tolu Coker took a different approach, replacing the traditional catwalk with an immersive presentation titled Act I: Common Ground.
By opening her creative process to the public through research materials, sewing stations, fabric explorations, and personal references, she transformed fashion into a conversation about identity, work, womanhood, and belonging.
The result was a thoughtful and reflective showcase that underscored her growing influence within British and global fashion circles.
Though their approaches differed, the three designers shared a common achievement: they ensured that Nigeria’s presence at London Fashion Week was impossible to ignore.
