There are actors whose performances entertain, and there are those whose presence lingers long after the cameras stop rolling.

His death at the age of 40 has left Nollywood grappling with the loss of one of its most recognisable leading men, a performer whose effortless charm, infectious smile and commanding screen presence made him a favourite among audiences across Africa.

After a private battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer, Ekubo passed away on 11 May 2026, a loss that came as a profound shock to colleagues and fans alike.

Born Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke on 10 April 1986, the Abia State native grew up with ambitions that initially pointed towards law rather than acting.

He attended Federal Government College, Daura, before studying Law at the University of Calabar. Yet, like many remarkable careers, destiny had other plans.

His journey into entertainment began in modelling, where his striking looks and confidence earned him the first runner-up position at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria competition.

The exposure opened doors into Nollywood, but it was talent that sustained his rise.

Ekubo made his screen debut with a modest role in Sinners in the House in 2003, but his breakthrough came nearly a decade later with Weekend Getaway. From there, his career gathered remarkable momentum.

He would go on to feature in dozens of films, including Lagos Cougars, The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Power of 1, A Sunday Affair and Afamefuna, becoming one of Nollywood’s most dependable leading actors.

Audiences gravitated towards him because he possessed a rare versatility.

He could play the charming romantic lead with convincing ease, switch effortlessly into comedy, or deliver emotionally layered performances in family dramas. On screen, he projected confidence and warmth.

Off screen, colleagues frequently described him as courteous, generous and deeply professional.

His appeal extended beyond cinema. Ekubo became one of Nigeria’s most recognisable style icons, admired for his refined fashion sense and polished public image.

Whether attending premieres, hosting events or representing brands, he carried himself with elegance that made him a fixture on best-dressed lists and a favourite of lifestyle publications.

Perhaps what has made his passing especially heartbreaking is the quiet dignity with which he bore his illness.

Even close friends were unaware of the severity of his condition until news of his death emerged.

In an era where public figures often live every moment in the spotlight, Ekubo chose privacy, confronting his health challenges away from public attention.

His family later described his battle as one marked by remarkable courage, unwavering faith and enduring hope.

The outpouring of grief that followed spoke volumes. Actors, filmmakers, producers and fans remembered not only an accomplished performer but also a colleague whose kindness matched his talent.

Social media became a gallery of memories, photographs and heartfelt tributes celebrating a life that had touched so many within and beyond the Nigerian film industry.

Alexx Ekubo’s legacy cannot be measured solely by the number of films he appeared in or the awards he received.

It lives in the characters that brought laughter, romance and emotion to millions of viewers; in the young actors who saw in him a model of professionalism; and in the audiences who found joy in his performances.

His story is also a poignant reminder of life’s fragility. Beneath the glamour of celebrity are lives shaped by private struggles that often go unseen.

In death, as in life, Alexx Ekubo leaves behind a lesson in grace.
