City, Style, Season At Africa Fashion Week Nigeria

    By Olayinka Akanbi

Africa Fashion Week Nigeria 2025 showcased culture, fashion, and emerging designers, blending heritage with modern creativity in Lagos

Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN) 2025 unfolded less like a conventional runway event and more like a cultural gathering shaped by the rhythm of December in Lagos.

Held on December 20 and 21 at the J Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, this year’s edition was themed as the “Naija December Experience”, a concept that deliberately blurred the lines between fashion, music, commerce, and city life.

From the moment guests arrived, it was clear that the organisers were intent on expanding what a fashion week could mean.

The runway remained central, but it was surrounded by activity.

Designers presented collections that moved easily between tradition and modern expression, with Aso Oke, Adire, and Ankara appearing in forms that felt current without losing their cultural grounding.

Over thirty designers from Nigeria and other African countries took part, offering a range of silhouettes that reflected both everyday wear and aspirational fashion.

The choice of venue mattered. Hosting the event at the J Randle Centre anchored the showcases in a space dedicated to Yoruba history, quietly reinforcing the idea that fashion is inseparable from heritage.

This connection was evident in the collections themselves, many of which leaned into storytelling, craftsmanship, and references to identity rather than spectacle alone.

AFWN was established with a clear goal of helping African designers grow beyond local markets.

Over the years, it has become a trusted platform where creativity meets opportunity, introducing new designers to wider audiences while providing access to training, mentorship, and partnerships that support long-term growth.

Each edition expands that mission by creating space for emerging talent while strengthening pathways to commercial success.

Speaking on the 2025 edition, founder and executive director, Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, reflected on how far the platform had come.

She noted that Africa Fashion Week Nigeria was created to help African designers scale globally and that strategic partnerships continue to strengthen that purpose.

According to her, collaborations with Sterling Bank and Made by Nigerians have widened access to visibility, skills development, and commercial support for designers positioned for international markets.

She also described the 2025 edition as one of the most inclusive and commercially focused in the event’s history.

Away from the catwalks, AFWN leaned into participation. Pop-up markets allowed designers and fashion entrepreneurs to engage directly with buyers and attendees.

Live music and DJ sets ran alongside the shows, creating an atmosphere that felt closer to a festival than an industry-only gathering.

The fashion was not presented as something distant or exclusive but as part of the social fabric of the city.

The buildup to the event had already hinted at this approach.

Earlier in December, a fashion takeover at Ojaja Mall brought models and designers into a public space, turning an ordinary shopping experience into a preview of what was to come.

It was a reminder that African fashion thrives in everyday environments where people encounter it naturally.

Support for emerging designers remained a quiet but important focus. Beyond the shows, the platform provided opportunities for visibility, networking, and learning, reinforcing its role as a bridge between creativity and sustainable careers.

With backing from corporate partners such as Sterling Bank and initiatives focused on Made by Nigerians, the event positioned fashion as both a cultural expression and economic activity.
