Ojude Oba 2025 celebration draws 200,000 to Ijebu-Ode, blending culture, unity, and commerce in honour of the Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona
The Ojude Oba 2025 celebration has once again affirmed its status as one of Nigeria’s most powerful cultural showcases.

Held on June 10, just days after Eid el-Kabir, the festival transformed the town of Ijebu-Ode into a dazzling spectacle of colour, rhythm, and tradition, honouring the 91-year-old Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Originating in the 19th century as a thanksgiving gesture by early Muslim converts to the king, the festival has evolved into an inclusive celebration that unites Muslims, Christians, traditionalists, and diaspora communities under a shared identity.
This year’s edition drew over 200,000 participants and observers, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa.
But beyond the dignitaries, it was the people who defined the celebration.
The regberegbe age-grade groups emerged as the soul of the event, adorned in intricate traditional wear, parading into the palace square with chants, dances, and songs dedicated to the Awujale.
More than eighty-five such groups took part, each embodying the pride, unity, and continuity of Ijebu heritage.
“It’s the heartbeat of our culture,” said Adewale Omisore, a UK-based architect who returned to Nigeria for the celebration.
“No matter where I live, this is the one day I remember what it means to be Ijebu.”
Globacom, celebrating 20 years as headline sponsor, rewarded outstanding age groups with vehicles, cash, and other prizes—an initiative that reinforced the festival’s economic empowerment dimension.
Ojude Oba is not just a celebration of our culture; it is a tool for development and international visibility.
Yet, the most electrifying moment came with the arrival of the Balogun warrior families.
On richly decorated horses, the Balogun Kuku, Odunuga, and Adesoye clans rode in with martial flair and ancestral pride.
A young descendant, experiencing the ride for the first time, was reported to have spent over ₦200,000 on regalia and horse preparation, a testament to personal devotion and historical responsibility.
Beyond pageantry, the festival emphasised religious harmony.
Though rooted in Islamic tradition, the day opened with Muslim prayers, featured Christian hymns, and ended with traditional rites, embodying a rare and enduring interfaith unity.
Economically, the festival delivered a major boost. Over ₦2 billion was reportedly generated in sponsorships, with an additional \$10 million circulating within the local economy.
Hotels in and around Ijebu-Ode were fully booked, and the surge in spending benefited artisans, traders, and hospitality operators.
“Ojude Oba is not just a celebration of our culture; it is a tool for development and international visibility,” said Governor Abiodun.
Oreagba, now a Cultural Ambassador, added, “People spent money. All hotels were booked, everything. People even had to find hotels outside Ijebu-Ode.”
For returnees, the festival was both emotional and aspirational. It served as a reminder of roots and a demonstration of cultural resilience in a globalising world.
Ojude Oba 2025 was more than a spectacle. It was a renewal of faith, community, and heritage.

In the sea of chants, fabrics, horses, and hallelujahs, it delivered a message clear to all who witnessed it: culture, when celebrated with purpose, can heal divisions, empower communities, and inspire nations.
