Olojo Festival: For Heritage, For Culture

Olojo Festival 2025 reignited Yoruba pride in Ile-Ife through ritual, culture, and celebration that connected tradition to a changing Nigeria

From September 25th to 28th, 2025, the ancient city of Ile-Ife buzzed with life as thousands of locals, tourists, and culture lovers came together for the annual Olojo Festival, a cherished highlight of Yoruba tradition.

The sound of drums echoed through the historic streets, accompanied by early morning chants, as excitement grew for the rituals that celebrate the “Day of the First Dawn”.

With the theme ‘Cultural Rebirth’, this festival was a powerful statement of identity and a celebration of continuity in a Nigeria that’s changing rapidly.

Staying true to tradition, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), kicked off his seven-day period of seclusion at the Iledi House in the Iremo quarters.

During this time of solitude, fasting, and prayer, he sought divine intervention for Nigeria, praying for peace, unity, and stability amid the challenges and uncertainties the nation faces. When he finally emerged on Friday, September 27, the excitement of thousands erupted into celebration.

Surrounded by chiefs and a wave of worshippers dressed in white, the Ooni shared that his time in seclusion was dedicated to praying for the country’s leaders, families, widows, and everyday Nigerians, emphasising that festivals are not just grand displays but meaningful moments of hope and renewal.

The festival was not bound only to its sacred core. It was a vibrant celebration that spanned several days, blending rituals, sports, and modern creativity.

A five-kilometer road race, backed by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, attracted young people from all over Osun State, all competing in the spirit of health and unity.

Cultural games, a talent hunt, and a colloquium focused on Yoruba heritage provided opportunities for the younger generation to connect with the festival’s deeper meaning.

With the support of government and private sponsors, the festival embraced the digital age, livestreaming performances, hosting cultural trivia giveaways, and transforming Ile-Ife into both a local hub and a global stage.

As the Ooni prepared to wear the sacred Aare crown, said to embody the spirit of Ogun, the god of iron, war, and creativity, the meaning behind it all grew even richer.

This crown, worn just once a year, links the present-day community to a mythic past, a time when Oduduwa’s descendants first roamed the earth and the Yoruba universe was set in order.

This was a reminder that Olojo is a reenactment of creation, a declaration that identity survives in ritual.

For many locals, the Olojo Festival stands as a vibrant testament to Ile Ife’s enduring role as the heart of Yoruba civilisation.

The lively chants, rhythmic drumbeats, and colourful processions serve as a reminder that tradition is not just a relic of the past but a dynamic force that shapes our identities today.

The pride in the eyes of elders, the curiosity of young people, and the devotion of worshippers point to the fact that heritage, when celebrated in its fullness, keeps people bound together.

Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, attending the closing ceremonies on September 29, seized the occasion to call for unity among politicians, urging that the spirit of Olojo be carried into governance.

His praise for the Ooni’s vision stressed the festival’s role as an instrument of social cohesion and development.

The Olojo Festival 2025 ultimately served as a powerful reminder that culture can act as both an anchor and a compass.
